Serve the Community

Serving the community has been and continues to be a large part of my life. Since fourth grade, when I started singing in church choirs and volunteering for their Vacation Bible School program, I realized the joy that came out of serving others. Whether it be performing in a concert to benefit a nursing home or elementary school, helping a child learn, making personal care kits to be distributed worldwide, or something as simple as opening a door for someone, it feels good to give back. Serving my community makes me realize how fortunate I am to have all that I have, when so many have to go without.

Live With Purpose

I believe that everyone has a purpose that they are destined to fulfill during the course of their life. Knowing that I have a purpose gives me something to keep working at every day, and assurance that whatever I end up doing by the end of my life, it was all part of a bigger plan. When I went to declare my major in biomedical engineering, my advisor asked me, “What do you want to do with your BME degree?”. The first thing that came to mind was that I wanted to better the lives of people living with disease or disability, because there are people in my life that I would love to be able to help. Right then I found my purpose. I knew that I wanted to help heal people, either through the science and engineering perspective, or music.

Keep Life Balanced

I have always been one to make to-do lists to keep myself on track with my assignments and extracurriculars. Having a list of day-to-day goals helps me to stay organized and balanced. A person is never truly balanced all the time. But keeping tasks at a reasonable quantity prevents me from overwhelming myself. One of the reasons that I declared a music minor was to keep the subject matter of my classes well-rounded. I didn’t want to have all math and science classes on my college transcript. With the music minor, I could explore different areas of performance, theory, music technology, and history that balance out all the technical material associated with an engineering curriculum.

Build and Maintain Relationships

My relationships with friends and family keep me going during the hard times in life. Everyone needs someone to lean on when they’re stressed or upset. I am very close with my family, and am fortunate to go to college not too far from them. Having them to turn to while I’m away at school is very helpful and grounding for me. I have also learned a lot about how to build relationships throughout the course of my life. I found the perfect group of friends that I can fully rely upon. I found mentors that guide me through life’s rough patches. I know I wouldn't be where I am today  if I didn’t have relationships with so many amazing people. Especially in the professional world, connections with people can push my career forward and provide me with incredible opportunities. Maintaining and building relationships supplies a wealth of resources to call upon if I ever need help. Having a support system is vital to success in any industry.
